Today’s cartoon shows just how daring Arno is… When I invented this character, he didn’t come off as brave. He’s evolved into a reckless sort who is just focused on discovery and not about what will happen to him personally (ironically a little like Josh Gate of Destination Truth who does some truly insane things).

I aspire to be like that to some extent, but the survival instinct kicks into gear causing me to lean toward self preservation. I have no problem with the idea of diving, just not into a dark hole in the Bermuda Triangle… especially one as narrow as I drew it. I would do a cavernous version perhaps…

Theories abound about the Triangle. Some say it spans the remains of Atlantis and that huge crystals cause the strange anomalies, instrument upset, etc. A few psychics have claimed that it is a portal to allow aliens to visit us conveniently. Back in the 1970’s I remember hearing a Florida radio station was asking questions about the Triangle and received a strange call-in that was more of an other-worldly voice almost an EVP which pretty much said that everything has an aura and that the Bermuda Triangle is a part of the Earth’s aura. (I retained this information as I’m as curious as Arno about these things – I even had the Bermuda Triangle board game! I chipped a tooth on that during assembly of magnets into the pieces. Guess this proves I’m a dork to some degree.)

As far as disappearances of ships and planes go, the Gulf Stream at that point is quite powerful and can drag off any wreckage quite handily. I imagine a bad storm could overturn a ship there easily. And, when your compass runs amok in a plane, it’s just a bad scene… We all remember JFK Junior crashing his plane because of flying in the dark during bad weather and a lack of instruments telling him where he was in relation to earth and sky. He wasn’t anywhere near the Triangle. So, if one’s instruments are out of sync because of magnetic anomalies, well… another score for the Triangle.

Many meso-meterological storms occur in this vicinity - freakish weather that sports thunder storm, cyclonic and tornadic activity all rolled together into one big mess. There is the theory methane gas released from the trench there could cause a craft to sink when the gas bubbles up in quantity unexpectedly.

The cause of the magnetic nonsense has not been discovered yet. There is a second Triangle called the Devil’s Sea by the Japanese and Filipinos. It hangs out off the east coast of Japan. Perhaps this is the home base of Lemuria, the second lost civilization that existed at the time of Atlantis.

Until we have discovered just what happens to folks who venture into the Triangle and never return, we will continue to speculate on it. Personally, the cartoon portable hole is as likely a theory as the next. I’ll be hanging out one day and five torpedo bombers from the 1945 squadron will fly into my office and create quite a disturbance.
