Last night’s interview with Thorn from Tears and Pain comic was rather exciting for me. I don’t often get to discuss art, technique, character development when I hash out with the paranormal crowd. I also didn’t have to tell ONE ghost story! LOL
Recently I’ve watched some of the Entities characters mature into deeper beings… Merv being one of those. I find his character is morphing into someone more substantial. As Thorne pointed out, he is a typical rocker stereotype. And yes, that is exactly how Merv began. However, he is changing before my very quill pen… for the better! No longer are his emotions flat, smirk, comic relief… I find myself drawing him angry, concerned (although not concerned enough to fear for his safety in obviously perilous situations – why lose that humor?!).
I also find it interesting that I don’t claim to know everything about my characters. Vera is very closed to me, as is Vlad. I’m not sure of their histories. Though I bet they emerge in time as I write the strip.
Organic was a term that came up and it fits. I draw organically, the ideas unfold that way as does the characters. This comic is not stagnant, it’s moving and growing.
So, stick with me as this develops and let’s see what direction it takes us! The road is always less travelled and far more interesting this way!
Also check out the podcast of last nights show! It’s the first one for Thorne and Walter (though Walter couldn’t get his talking device working). I will prove to be interesting radio for the cartoonist set!
